The Kukai group in collaboration with the Tanttaka theatre company have staged a show that combines theatre and music with traditional dance about the experiences of the Basque children who were evacuated during the Spanish Civil war of 1936, entitled ‘1937, gogoaren bidezidorretatik’ (1937: Along the paths of the mind). It was performed in Errenteria (Gipuzkoa) in November 2002, it staged its first big performance at the Donostia Antzoki Zaharra theatre in February 2003 and has been making its way from one theatre to another.
On May 7, 1937, thousands of children from the Basque Country had to flee. With their families far away, they learned what it was like to experience true sadness and loneliness. Of those many children, seven have been chosen to recount their history. They will show us the many bitter moments yet also happy moments they experienced. How? Dancing will be these children's life saver and Juan Mari Beltran's music will remind them that their home is near, and lead their spirits to the path. |
